Students at Eagle Pass High School were seen leaving the building early Monday morning and an announcement was made over the loudspeaker for all staff to report to the library as what has been said to be a large swarm of bats was discovered in one of the original wings of the building which has been in use since 1976. The mandatory evacuation of the school by Principal Vale Moreno caused several traffic jams in and around the area. According to sources, work was being done to replace ceiling tiles in the school when it was discovered that a large colony of the fruit and insect eating mammals. Students leaving the campus stated that they had been told to go home upon further notice. The staff of the school was also released later that morning for their safety. A press release issued by the Eagle Pass Independent School District stated that classes were canceled due to a number of bats that were located on campus. The bats were discovered by school personnel while students and faculty began arriving on campus. Superintendent of Schools, Gilberto Gonzalez ordered the closure of the building to ensure the well-being of all students and staff. Licensed exterminators from Border Pest Control and City of Eagle Pass Vector Control manually caught the bats by net and humanely put them down. No pesticides were used on school grounds. No children have come in contact with the bats and proper procedures are being enforced by school personnel. The frequency and volume of the bats indicate this is an isolated incident. This problem has been addressed, and is now resolved. Beginning Tuesday, January 14, 2014, classes for Eagle Pass High School will resume as normally scheduled. Spokesperson Melissa Gratkowski informed The News Gram that EPISD employees were working on taking care of the situation and the bat problem as humanely as possible and EPISD Board President Ignacio Saucedo stated that the problem was a big one as he said they may have, "One wing that may be inoperable," and it was required that staff and students be evacuated.
