Texas State Representative Poncho Nevarez introduced House Bill 3767

during the 86th Legislature session which is centered in looking for funding to maintain certain roads near an international border. Nevarez’s bill if enacted would require the state to amend Chapter 250, of the Transportation Code by adding Section 250.002 to read as follows: Sec. 250.002. Maintenance of Certain Roads. The department shall ensure that a route in the state highway system, including Farm-to- Market Road 1021, between Eagle Pass and Laredo is sufficiently maintained to allow for economic development and the provision of homeland security along the route.

This bill would be of great benefit for the region and would secure funding for these type of infrastructure projects throughout the area. The act if passed and signed into law would take affect on September 1, 2019.

At this point, Nevarez’s bill has been referred to the House Transportation Committee to be reviewed on March 19, 2019. If moved on to the House Floor it will then be voted on and sent to the Texas Senate. If passed it will be sent to the Governor’s desk to be considered and possibly be signed into law. Representative Nevarez has been outspoken on the necessity that the border region needs including more funding and attention to infrastructure projects. Maverick County would benefit from this law as the community on a yearly basis continues to grow.
