In Del Rio this morning, current Maverick County employee Eduardo Rene Rodriguez, age 40, surrendered to

federal authorities after a federal grand jury indicted him this week in connection with an alleged bribery

scheme announced United States Attorney Robert Pitman and FBI Special Agent in Charge Armando

Fernandez.

The federal grand jury indictment, returned on Wednesday and unsealed today, charges Rodriguez with two

counts of receiving bribes. According to the indictment, Garcia’s duties for Maverick County included acting

as a liaison between Maverick County and private contractors hired to perform work for the county. The

indictment alleges that from January 1, 2010, until September 30, 2010, and again from January 1, 2011, until

March 31, 2011, Rodriguez accepted bribes to be influenced and rewarded in connection with a series of

contracts worth more than $5,000 in Maverick County funds.

Upon conviction, Rodriguez faces up to ten years in federal prison for each count. Rodriguez, who remains in

federal custody, is scheduled to have his detention hearing at 9:00am on Wednesday, November 14, 2012,

before U.S. Magistrate Judge Victor Garcia in Del Rio.

This ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Texas Department

of Public Safety. Individuals who have first-hand information about corruption, fraud, or bribery related to

Maverick County are urged to contact the FBI at (210) 225-6741.

Assistant United States Attorney Michael Galdo is prosecuting this case on behalf of the Government.

An indictment is merely a charge and should not be considered as evidence of guilt. The defendant is

presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

In what has been heralded as a clear statement by Texas voters, Pete Gallego has done the unthinkable, he has unseated a Republican incumbent in the traditionally red state of Texas by an overwhelmingly large margin as Gallego ousted the incumbent by a margin of 96,477 to Canseco's 87,255. "Growing up in West Texas, I have a bit of an independent streak," stated Gallego after a hard fought victory, "My practice has always been to vote in the interests of the people at home. That will not change. I intend to fight for every constituent- not just those at one end of the political spectrum." "Together, we will be an example for the rest of the country." Congressional District 23 spans 48,000 square miles, runs across two time zones, includes all or part of 29 counties, and makes up almost 22% of the State of Texas geographically. "This campaign has already been a long journey, but now the real work begins. It's time to get to work so that all families can have a shot at the American Dream, not just a privileged few," reiterated the victor. "None of this would've been possible without the many people who made calls, who knocked on doors, and who volunteered because they wanted to make a difference." Gallego will truly be a voice for Eagle Pass and Maverick County in Washington and we hope to continue supporting his labor of dedication, optimism for the future of South Texas and being a true representative of small business as the backbone of the American economy.
