-Eagle Pass

In the second installment of our weekly feature, The Eagle Pass News Gram highlights two players from each of our Fightin' High School Football Squads, the New-look Eagle Pass Eagles who take on John Jay this week and The Silver & Black Attack CC Winn Mavericks who are off this week but are preparing to play their first district ball game vs Southside next Friday. First up for the Mavericks is starting Linebacker Ryan Pike. First of all Ryan, congratulations on a big game last week against Eagle Pass.  You were all over the field!  Good job. I've got a battery of questions for you, are you ready?

Yes, Sir.

I'll begin by asking who your influences are?

My biggest influence would have to be my Dad.  He is a police officer and he has always tried to instill in me to do the right things and I admire his willingness to help people in need.  I hope to be a police officer one day just like him.

What are your goals this season?

Simple.  Playoffs.

Who's your favorite NFL team?

The Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans.

College team?

LSU.

What's your favorite play?

Maverick Pinch Smoke because everyone blitzes besides me, which gives me the opportunity to go where I want. I get to clean up if any off-colored jersey that comes through with that ball.

Give me your career highlight.

I would have to say this game against the Eagle Pass Eagles we were all over the place, I was so pumped up, the crowd was extremely loud... So loud that I had to yell out my calls and my teammates who were three feet in front of me couldn't hear.  I was chasing Alan Morales on that last play.  What a play!

What are your plans after Graduation?

I hope to be able to play baseball in college.

Major?

Criminal Justice.  I'd like to work in law enforcement.

Give me some advice to give to a seventh grader starting football.

Try hard.  Keep working hard and you'll get better.

Finally, tell our readers what it feels like to come out of the tunnel.

It's great.  My QB Reyes Lopez and I always wait to be the last ones and it feels amazing to watch my team come out in front of us to the cheers of the crowd and the sound of our Fight Song.

Give me some advice to a seventh grader playing football for the first time.

It doesn't matter how big or how small you are, if you can play you will play. I'm 5'8, 170 playing against people almost a foot taller than me and easily 100 lbs heavier. If you work hard you will do good.

Next up is Eagle Wide receiver Ricky Reyes. Congratulations on that amazing last second play vs Winn.  The things gone viral! It has over 15,000 views!  Proud of you. I've got some questions for you are you ready?

Yes, Sir.

Who are your influences?

My parents.  They've done so much for me.  I want to make them proud and I think about this every day.  My professional influence would have to be Dez Bryant of the Cowboys.  I look up to him.  I see what he does and try to recreate it on the field.

What are your goals this season?

Win district, go to the playoffs and go past the third round.

Who's your favorite NFL team?

The Dallas Cowboys.

College?

The Texas Longhorns.

What's your favorite play and why?

One Backside Tag Bend Corner.  It's just me and the corner and it's my job to beat him.

What is your career highlight?

The play last Friday against CC Winn.  We were down to our last play.  If we don't make that, we go into overtime and both teams had fought hard up to that point.  When I came down with that ball, I heard an incredible cheer from the crowd that I will never forget.

What are your plans after graduation?

Go to college and start my career.

Major?

Undecided.

What advice would you give a seventh grader playing football for the first time?

Keep working hard.  You're going to get your chance.  When you get in you're going to have to step it up and make a play.

Finally, tell our readers what it feels like to come out of the tunnel.

It feels great.  Looking out at the stands at the people cheering for you is amazing.
