The CC Winn Mavericks traveled to the Queen City to take on the Del Rio Rams at Levermann Stadium in their first District 29-AAAAA tilt of the season.

The spirit of Carl Guys had to be feeling the Friday Night Lights and he was probably wondering why Eagle Pass was donned in Silver & Black as the Rams drew first blood on a fifty yard drive that culminated in a spectacular 12 yard run by Ram QB Jorge Fernandez.

Both the RAms and the Mavericks defenses came to play as drive after drive was thwarted by each opposing defensive squad and both punters got their share of the workload as Pedro Elizondo for Winn and Mark Esquivel for Del Rio had to punt several times before the gun ending the first half echoed in the falling rain with Del Rio caressing a 7-0 lead at the half.

Again turnovers would be the difference for the Mavericks as the Rams were able to take advantage of a fumble deep in Winn territory to score on a 26 yard pas from Fernandez to wide receiver Gus Sandoval to put the Blue and White up 14-0 early in the third.

Fernandez did his best Johnny Manziel impersonation and ran in another one this time from 36 yards out that had the KTDR announcers remembering Vince Young as the Rams went ahead 21-0 after Esquivel's PAT.

Maverick featured back Deion Alonso had another 100 yard game, yet was unable to break free to score against a stingy Ram D.

Chris Cantu had a few significant ground gains and Robert Ramirez saw his first action of the season with a ten yard gain, but it was not enough to overtake the Rams whose Eduardo Esquivel scored on a 12 yard run up the gut for the final DR score.

The Mavs host Alexander here in two weeks as they are Open and will try to regroup and recoup to give the Bulldogs a heavy dose of of Silver & Black shellac as they have a few players nursing minor injuries and will be ready and looking forward to face the challenge of their remaining District 29-AAAAA schedule.
