Bulldog scat back Xavier Skaggs did manage to break two runs, one of significant length and quarterback Aaron Swain ran one in to go up 20-0 and the Mavericks stopped a drive to hold them to a field goal, but the Mavericks also were able to tack on a field goal by Jonathan Cazares before halftime to make the halftime score Alexander 23, CC Winn 3.
In the second half It was Skaggs who struck first on a swing pass and he found the far sideline to make the score 30-3.
Then quarterback Chris Cantú found a streaking Hector Bermea on a play action fake to Deion Alonso on a 70 yard strike to put the Silver & Black on the Alexander 10.
Cantú ran it in himself from 10 yards out to make it 30-10.
It was on the ensuing kickoff that Skaggs once again took the air out of the EPISD Football Stadium with an 80 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
An observation made by a loyal Maverick fan in the stands was that even though they were clearly ahead with a significant lead, the Bulldogs continued to run the same swing pass to Skaggs which would eat up real estate in bunches and this fan thought they were trying to run up the score.
The only observation this reporter made was that no one was able to effectively put a helmet on the Bulldog back, much to our disappointment, but it was on an ensuing kickoff that Neon Deion Alonso repeated Skaggs feat on a kickoff return to find a seam in the Alexander kickoff team and find an open running lane and absolutely no one on their kickoff team was able to catch up with Alonso who took the ball to the house for the Mav score. Three Bulldog defenders were with a foot from Alonso when he turned on the jets and left them in his rear-view mirror. An amazing return that truly shows the breakaway speed of the Maverick standout who has eclipsed the 800 yard rushing mark in six games.
The final score was Alexander 51, Winn 17.
