Not exactly the Tiger of old.
    Not completely terrible, either.
Tiger Woods is probably not going to win the Masters, unless something weird even by his standards happens over the next three rounds. His protestations aside, nine shots is an awful long way to come back for a player whose game is just beginning to come back.
But after a round Thursday where his short game looked much like the Tiger of days past, he walked off the 18th green with a smile on his face and a bit of a bounce in his step. At the very least, Woods has a realistic chance of completing all four rounds of a tournament for the first time since last year's British Open.
And that's progress, at least in the way Woods is measured these days.
"I felt good," Woods said after a shooting a 1-over 73 despite hitting the ball in places around Augusta National he hasn't seen before. "I felt I hit the ball well enough to shoot 3-under-par."
Forgive Woods if he was somewhat in denial. Just finishing rounds in the past few years has been an issue, so he had to be breathing a sigh of relief when he sat down at the scorer's table and signed for his 73.
And the fact is he's not only nine shots behind first round leader Jordan Spieth, but couldn't break par on a day made for scoring. Conditions were so benign that nearly a third of the 97-man field finished under par, including 65-year-old Tom Watson, who beat Woods by two shots with a 71.

Alex Rodriguez got cheered at Yankee Stadium, a rain delay got booed in Miami, and David Ortiz got a quick introduction to baseball's new speed-up rules.
It was opening day all across the majors Monday, and pitchers were in command early.
Oakland right-hander Sonny Gray took a no-hitter into the eighth inning of his win over Texas. New Washington ace Max Scherzer and Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber of Cleveland carried their no-hit bids into the sixth before falling behind. Seattle star Felix Hernandez, Detroit lefty David Price and Boston righty Clay Buchholz dominated.
A day after the Cardinals blanked the Cubs at Wrigley Field in the big league opener, the other 28 teams were in action. To fans, players and everyone else at the ballpark and watching on TV, it was easy to be optimistic.

Even without an undefeated team, the NCAA title game drew its largest TV audience in 18 years.
Duke's 68-63 comeback win over Wisconsin on Monday night on CBS averaged 28.3 million viewers, the most since 1997, when Arizona upset defending champion Kentucky in overtime, CBS and Turner Sports said Tuesday. That's up 33 percent from the 21.3 million for Connecticut's victory over Kentucky last year.
Wisconsin had defeated the previously unbeaten Wildcats in the semifinals, dashing what could have been a record audience for a potential Kentucky-Duke final. The interest for the matchup between the Badgers and Blue Devils still proved high, riding the momentum of a tournament that drew strong ratings all the way through.
The games across CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV averaged 11.3 million viewers, the most since 1993 and up 8 percent from a year ago.

Spartan Fit Training Center has scheduled a series of Free Women's Self- defense Seminars to take place on Saturdays at least once every month. Van Guard Krav Maga Lead Instructor Joe Montes wants to empower women through knowledge and realistic defense techniques.  The seminars teach awareness, avoidance, and defense if needed in threatening scenarios.
Women find the practical nature of our self defense programs to be both inspiring and encouraging. Krav Maga, an Israeli-born system, was developed from inception for men AND women – big and tall, short and small. Based on instinctive reactions to danger and gross motor skills only – Krav Maga is elegantly simple and the most effective self defense system anywhere.
At Spartan Fit, success is measured by the number of people whose quality of lives is improved. So in addition to the empowerment of women, through education and training, the center also  spotlights and features one female entrepreneur at each of the free Women's Self-defense Seminars.
SFTC is looking to establish a positive environment that promotes success, and what better way than to support other women on the same mission.
The first company to be featured was Keep Collective by sisters Mishell Rodriguez and Lorena Cantu.  Other entrepreneurs teaming up with Spartan Fit include: Younique, Skinny Fiber, Herbal Life, etc . Come out and support all of the women who have decided to live life on their terms!  Strong heart, strong body, stronger mind.
The next Free Womens' Self-defense Seminar will be on April 11th @ 11:30am.  For more information, please visit www.spartanfittrainingcenter.com or the Spartan Fit Training Center Fb page.  The location is 1125 Del Rio Blvd, Eagle Pass, TX 830-513-1036
