In a new weekly feature, The Eagle Pass News Gram will highlight one player per week for each of our local Fightin' High School Football Teams, The Silver & Black Attack CC Winn Mavericks who will be taking on the Uvalde Coyotes on the road in Week 1 and The High Flyin' Eagle Pass Eagles who will be at home against the Weslaco East Wildcats. First up for either squad are the starting quarterbacks Ty Chisum and Juan Elizondo. First of all Ty, it's an honor for me to be featuring you as I consider your family to be very close to my family and I due to the lasting friendship my father Sammy Ibarra and your grandfather Frank Chisum had, who both had exceptional careers in the glory days of Eagle Pass football under then head coach Cozel Foster. Your granddad played QB back then and your uncle Rick and your father David also started at the same position so I'll begin by asking who your influences are.

UIL issues reprimand, suspensions for Eagle Pass High School Baseball Coach Reynol Mendoza

Press Release

-Austin, TX

The State Executive Committee of the University Interscholastic League has issued Eagle Pass High School coach Reynol Mendoza a public reprimand and a three-year probation for discrepancies in the acquisition of officials during the 2013 baseball playoffs. Mendoza was also issued a suspension for the first six district games of the next baseball season.

The decision stems from last years playoff game against Mission Sharyland High School in the Regional Quarter-Final Championship where the then coach of the Rattlers, Coach Barton Bickerton, filed a formal complaint against Coach Mendoza siting that he did not follow the appropriate protocol in choosing the four umpires for the teams.

Representatives of the Eagle Pass Independent School District were contacted for a statement regarding this issue but as of press time those requests were not answered.

When the San Antonio Spurs were silencing the nay sayers and laying any doubts to rest that they were the team to beat in the NBA's Western Conference and subsequently in the most amazing NBA Finals in recent memory, shooting guard Danny Green made his presence felt time after time after time.

#4 was in such a zone that his three-point attempts seemed to effortlessly fly from his fingertips and fall through the rim like a hot knife through butter, but what many might not know is that it takes a very special person with highly motivated dedication and the intestinal fortitude to undergo the rigors of having to train in the hot confines of gymnasiums on any given day to bask in the glory of making a run for that ever-elusive ring on the world's biggest stage.

A proud native of Weslaco, Texas, Omar Figueroa Jr. is the first Golden Boy Promotions fighter from the Rio Grande Valley, and the 23-year-old power puncher is pleased to lead the way for his fellow Texans.

Unbeaten in 22 fights, with 16 of his wins coming by knockout in three rounds or less, Figueroa has torn through his opposition since turning pro with a 25 second stoppage of Edwin Espinoza in June of 2008.

16 more KO victories have followed for the 5-foot-8 lightweight prospect, who began boxing at the age of seven under the tutelage of his father, Omar Sr, a former fighter himself.

In December of 2009, Figueroa halted Anthony Woods in two rounds on the Juan Diaz vs Paul Malignaggi undercard at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, showing that he was ready to take his game to the next level, and he has not disappointed.

2010 saw “Panterita” defeat Edgar Portillo and Julian Rodriguez, and though he ended the year with a hard-fought eight round draw against 15-4 Arturo Quintero, he made it a clean sweep in 2011, compiling victories over John Figueroa (KO2), Eric Cruz (W8), and Marcos Herrera (KO2) to improve to 13-0-1 and set up a January 6, 2012 clash on Showtime against fellow prospect Michael Perez, which he won in punishing fashion, forcing Perez to retire in his corner after the sixth round.
